Balancing Act: Juggling Motherhood and a Thriving Freelance Business

In business, Mumstyle CEO, podcast, Quick Marketing Tips, Strategy and Tips by Team Annelise

For those of us who are working mummas, we have a lot we’re juggling. Even if we have support at home, and in our businesses.

I’ve been doing this for almost 7 years now and I’ve learnt a lot about the juggle.
When I started my business I had 2 children. I became the sole income earner of our household around a year in, had 2 more children, moved house twice, owner built a house, began homeschooling my kids, and travelling for months at a time internationally with my family.

That’s a lot of seasons.

I definitely made a lot of mistakes, backpedalled, tried new things, and learnt a lot.
The absolute best advice I can give you is: Be where you are.

Decide ahead of time what you want your week to look like, and stick to it as best you can.
Really think through this and get real with yourself around your priorities in terms of your health, your family, your friends and your business.

Choose how you will spend your time.

When you do that, you can plan ahead. Time block your calendar with everything that needs to get done. This structure gives you the freedom to know that everything is sorted.
YOu have a plan for that client, for paying those bills, for relaxing, for working out, for spending time with the kids … and so you don’t have to be juggling all these balls.

When you’re working, you can relax knowing you’ll be going to a walk with the family at 4pm.

When you’re on the walk, you’re not worrying about your inbox because it will be dealt with at 11am the next day.
When you’re answering emails you’re not stressing about marketing because that’s blocked off on Monday afternoons.

And so on and so on.

Now obviously you’re going to sub those examples for your own life – but there’s a few of the things in my own calendar that give me peace, allow me to be super productive, get everything done and enjoy the everyday moments.

If you’re not sure where to start with this, open up your calendar or your planner.

You’re going to do 5 steps.

  1. Highlight every time in the week you want to move your body.
  2. Then highlight time with your loved ones.
  3. Then highlight the life and house admin / must do tasks to keep your home running.
  4. Then highlight time you want to work ON your business.
  5. Lastly, highlight the time you’ll work IN your business, for client delivery and other related tasks.

Now – test that schedule. Next week. And adjust until you have something that feels good and where most of the timeblocks are actually happening as you’d like them to.

And whatever you’re doing, be where you are.
